Q36: The OPR Guide has accessibility limitations for certain candidates:
- Water towers need to be accessible without entering restricted area
- Ruins need to be accessible to the public
- Fire lookout tower needs to be open to the public
Why do these restrictions matter for these candidates and not for portals in other access restricted areas (like gated communities, company property, ...)?
A36: From NIA OPS, to clarify, the OPR Candidate Action Guide mentions:
Water Towers: ACCEPT if accessible without entering a restricted area, is uniquely decorated, or are otherwise a notable monument.
Ruins: ACCEPT. Falls under the criteria of tourist spots that showcase local flavor and culture and that make your city/neighborhood unique provided that the site is open and accessible to the public or can be accessed from an open sidewalk or viewing area. Fire Lookout Towers: ACCEPT if open to the public. Falls under the criteria of adventurous tourist attractions. REJECT lookout towers being used as private residences.
Unlike residential areas or business parks which are usually accessible by residents/employees, the above candidates may not necessarily have the same level of access. Note that in addition to not being in restricted areas, these candidates also need to meet the criteria mentioned.
Q50: How is Niantic addressing portals and then fields made from restricted access portals? Many agents have quit and slowed down play, especially newer ones because of these large fields that can't be dropped, and needing to wait for the faction who put them up, to take them down. Do you consider such portals within the spirit of the game?
A50: I’m not sure I understand the question. Restricted or limited access Portals may be valid Portals if they meet the criteria of a Portal. There is not a requirement that every person be able to access a Portal. Both factions utilize these types of Portals globally and they have been part of the game since earliest days. Therefore, I don’t find them against the spirit of the game.
Q1: Why are portals on private property allowed? Private corporations, military bases, etc. are content that an average agent is completely unable to access that can directly affect their gameplay with control fields covering them or links blocking them. They should not have to play at a disadvantage.
A1: Portals on corporate property are allowed because restricted access is not the same as private residential access. The people that can access portals on corporate grounds are doing so legally as they have access to the location. It would however, be considered trespassing in many areas of the world for anyone other than the property owner to access a Portal on private residential property. What you are referring to as a disadvantage is normalized globally.
Q23: In OPR, Water Towers have an exception to the accept rule. That is do not accept if one must gain access to a restricted area. Why does this rule not apply to other candidates? Or does it apply? Need some clarification please.
A23: I really don't know. I'll have to ask for clarification so I cannot provide an answer at this time.
Q262: Will there be any adjustments to restricted areas sooner or later?
A262: I have not heard of any planned changes.
Q16: I have two questions regarding portals. While I can see the value of having parks, churches, monuments, etc. as viable portals, I find myself puzzled by the inclusion of playgrounds. The minimum age is 13 and it would seem the majority of the playerbase is well over that. As someone who has been questioned by suspicious mothers at playgrounds (why is that strange lone man hanging around a playground with a camera?) and I would rather be questioned by the cops than have that happen again. Since schools are not allowed as portals (presumably because Niantic does not want strangers hanging around schools), why are playgrounds? Second, why are portals on military bases considered viable? Hospitals, firehouses, and other emergency services are considered off limits, so why should military bases, and other restricted government facilities be considered acceptable?
A16: Playgrounds that are within a park or a community gathering area are acceptable candidates. They fall under the criteria of public spaces that encourage walking and exercise. Currently, our policy is that Portals on Military bases should be given a one-star rating.
Q69: What do you think about portal candidates located in internal area of residential condominium, with access restricted to local residents and their guests? What do you think about portal candidates located in internal area of companies, with access restricted to her workers and their guests (i cannot join to the area without company authorization and the company not allow join to play ingress...)?
A69: Not all Portals need to be accessible to all Agents at all times. Think of it as an opportunity to make new friend.
