Q43: There was a recent debate on reddit about “Bridges” being portal candidates. Regular car bridges clearly should not be portals, however what about wooden walking trail bridges throughout a park or nature preserve on the trail/path?
A43: The answer from NIA OPS is, “If they are accessible by foot and expected to be used as part of the trail, they would meet criteria.”
Q45: Are we gonna get any more series of videos like the Dunraven series? The Nemesis trailer seems to point towards yes, but I'd like to know if there's any confirmed plans.
A45: If I tell you, it won’t be a surprise! I can say this, there is additional video content planned. It might not all be pre-recorded stuff though.
Q6: What's the status on Niantic sending out patches for
nianticlabs.com - Rivers and Trails 50th Anniversary - Niantic
A6: The patches started to get sent out in early December and I’m told that all of them will have been sent by next week.
Q22: Are Trail markers that use the picture/logo of the trail instead of a name a valid trail Marker for a portal if it meets all other criteria for a trail Marker portal submission?
A22: We would need more context for this. There are trailheads that might have the picture of the trail that would be a good candidate. There are also “you are here” trail signs that might not.
Q38: It's often been said that portals should be judged more leniently in a lower density area. Should this apply to a large portal sparse park or hiking trail located in the middle of an otherwise average density area?
A38: It’s really tough to make a determination based on the information provided. Average density to one person might be different for another. It’s also hard to provide anything without knowing how large the park is too. Is it just a baseball field? It is many acres? I’m sorry we couldn’t help clarify this. We just need more specifics.
Q1: What are you most looking forward to this year?
A1: The Google Pixel 3 XL, Atari VCS, Red Dead Redemption 2, more trailers for the movie Glass (to be released in January 2019), Venom the movie, Mary Poppins Returns the movie (don’t crap on my childhood), watching the What We Do in the Shadows spinoff, midterm elections in the U.S., the NFL season starting, finally getting a table at minibar by José Andrés, riding in NL1331X, the last season of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, starting a couch to 5k program, oh I could go on and on. The year is almost over and there is so much to do, enjoy, and experience yet.
Q61: Trail posts / guide markers, in the UK they are often little more than a wooden or concrete post indicating the trails name and/or pointing in the direction of the trail. They very rarely have any form of large signage or map attached. Does this qualify as a 5* suggestion as per the opr guidelines?
A61: NIA OPS says, “Yes, since they fall under the criteria of adventurous tourist attractions and encourages walk and exercise, it's ok to rate them at 5* even if they do not have any educational content.”
Q45: Do you think it would be possible to have a little trailer for the anime, seeing that the first episode was shown at Anime Expo?
A45: Yes. I can’t say more at this time though.
Q6: Happy New Year! My question is about trail markers. I submitted several directional trail markers (wooden posts with numbers and direction pointers on them). They all got rejected, although the guidelines say 5 stars? Can you clarify “trail markers” please?
A6: If it is as you describe, just a wooden marker with a number and an arrow, that's probably not a good candidate to submit. Find markers that show the name of the trail and have a description of the trail.
Q23: I have had two trail markers rejected due to being mistaken as duplicates. I plan to resubmit with better wording. However, the pictures I took have been added to the portals that were mistaken as the duplicate. Is there a way these pictures can be removed so as to prevent confusion?
A23: We will work on a solution to this problem.
Q30: Andrew Krug, is it hard to work in +Niantic?
A30: Is it hard work or is it hard to work? It’s hard to work for Niantic? I consider myself extremely lucky and blessed to be in the position that I am in and working for a company that positively impacting the lives of people around the world. So no, it isn’t hard to work for Niantic. Everyone at Niantic believes in our company mission. But is it hard work? I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t. But it should be. What we are doing is blazing the trail for a new genre of entertainment. We are still figuring out many things and making adjustments when required. Where some see failures, I see learning opportunities. Where some see success, I see room for improvement.
